Simms History

Thomas Stockwell Simms established the Simms Company in 1866. As an American Civil War Veteran, he invested his soldiers’ bonus and back pay in a tiny brush and broom enterprise in Portland, Maine. This start-up operation decided to move to Saint John, NB in 1872. This was a fast paced port city at this period, famous worldwide for its’ shipbuilding contributions.

Thomas Simms went through many tribulations but persisted with a variety of talents. He lost two spouses and suffered a terribly disastrous factory fire. He managed to focus even with these tragedies and powered his company ahead.



Simms was an enthusiastic traveller. In the 1900s, he was among the initial brush manufacturers to travel to China to directly purchase bristles. He was active in the lay missionary movement. The Simms Memorial Baptist Church is situated in India and is regarded as a significant enterprise.

Lewis Wesley Simms

When his dad passed in 1908, Lewis Wesley Simms took over as head of the enterprise. Over the next fifty years, Lewis Simms presided as the President. LW had a enthusiastic presence and commanding personality. This business grew from a localized start to a nationwide expansion. Lewis created automated brush-making equipment and promoted it, changing the industry forever. He was successful in attaining national popularity within the Canadian business economy. Mr. Simms was crowned the president of the Canadian Manufacturing Association together with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

He was posthumously awarded with a Industry Hall of Fame of the Canadian Hardware Houseware Manufacturing Association plus the New Brunswick Hall of Fame. Simms was really a visionary and a master of workforce relations. His organized and efficient approach allowed this company to flourish into the success it is today.



The founder’s great-grandson, Thomas Stockwell Simms III carries on growing the company’s solid integrity, building on the cultures that founded the business. By developing a seasoned and creative workforce, stable management and colourful marketing, the plant capacity devoted to new product progression and innovation with investments in the current equipment.
